In practice, it’s an evidence-driven loop—capture baseline, change one knob, re-capture, and verify with a minimal test set—so improvements are real, repeatable, and not just “brighter.”
H2-1. Problem Map: Low-Light vs NIR — what “bad image” really means
Low-light and NIR failures usually sound the same (“too dark / too noisy / too blurry / flickering”), but they come from different
physics and different knobs. This chapter translates visible symptoms into measurable signals and points each symptom to the
next evidence capture (not fixes yet).

NIR-specific causes that do NOT behave like “ordinary low-light”
Filter stack choice changes the world: IR-cut keeps color fidelity in daytime; IR-pass boosts night sensitivity but can break color and focus assumptions.
Material reflectance is different in NIR: plastics, fabrics, skin, and metals can invert contrast vs visible light. A scene that “should be bright” may be dark in NIR, and vice versa.
Illumination synchronization is the silent killer: NIR strobe that misses the exposure window looks like “low sensitivity” or “high noise”, but the root cause is timing.
Symptom → metric → cause bucket → next evidence (fast map)
A) “Too dark” but noise is not obvious
Metric: mean level + histogram (is the signal actually low or clipped/limited?)

Likely bucket: mains flicker aliasing, PWM lighting, exposure phase drift, strobe mismatch.

D) “Starfield” points that grow with heat or longer exposure

Hold exposure mode stable (same shutter/FPS) and use a consistent lens/filter setting.
For each step, capture ~30 frames and compute ROI mean and variance.
Interpretation (no heavy math needed):
If variance stays nearly flat at the darkest steps → read noise dominates.
If variance rises as mean rises → shot noise dominates in that region.
Why this matters: If the system is in a read-noise-dominant regime, the correct levers are readout mode and analog-domain choices
(later chapters cover gain strategy and exposure constraints). If it is already shot-noise-dominant, improvements come mainly from more photons
(optics, exposure, and NIR illumination timing).
Minimal Experiment #2 — Dark frames vs temperature (dark current + hot pixels)
Cover the lens (true dark). Capture at two exposure times: “normal” and “long”.
Repeat at two temperatures (cold vs warm; even a modest step is informative).
Compare:
Dark-frame mean increase with temperature/exposure → dark current influence.
Hot-pixel count increase with temperature/exposure → defect/hot pixel behavior.
Field implication: When “noise explodes after warm-up”, more denoise often makes detail collapse but does not remove the root cause.
Temperature-aware defect correction and controlled exposure become the primary stabilization path.
Fast visual rule (no instruments): random vs fixed-pattern
If the “texture” stays at the same pixel locations across frames (especially in dark regions), it is not ordinary random noise.
That is a fixed-pattern signature (DSNU/PRNU/column structure). Random noise “dances”; fixed pattern “sticks”.
This rule prevents wasting time cranking temporal denoise on a calibration problem.

H2-3. High-Gain Readout Strategy: analog gain, digital gain, dual conversion gain
Gain is not “free sensitivity”. The practical goal is to improve low-light usability while preserving highlight headroom and avoiding
denoise-driven texture collapse. This chapter explains what changes when gain is applied before vs after digitization,
and when to select a dual-conversion-gain (Dual-CG) or dual-gain mode (mode-level behavior only).
Core mental model (what you can observe in images)
Analog Gain (AG)
Applied ahead of digitization. Often helps when the system is operating near the read-noise floor, but it reduces effective
headroom at the bright end (highlights clip earlier).
Applied after digitization. It makes the output brighter, but it does not magically increase photon count.
It can push noise above denoise thresholds and trigger “wax/oil-paint” look.
A readout mode selection that shifts the noise–headroom balance point.
Use it to improve low-end behavior when read noise dominates, but watch for highlight headroom reduction and
mode-switch brightness jumps.
If dark regions look “grainy but stable” and ROI variance barely changes with brightness (read-noise-like behavior),
prioritize readout mode / Dual-CG selection and AG before relying on DG.
If variance rises with mean (shot-noise-like), gains mainly change appearance; the real improvements come from more photons
(optics, exposure constraints, and NIR illumination timing).
If highlights/reflective parts saturate early after increasing AG or switching mode, roll back AG/mode and protect headroom
(otherwise detail loss is irreversible).
If raising DG makes the scene brighter but textures collapse (wax look), treat it as a denoise-threshold interaction rather than a “sensor sensitivity” problem.
Evidence plan — prove “better SNR”, not just “brighter output”
Lock the scene: same lens/filter, same illumination, same framing. Include one dark ROI and one bright reflective ROI.
Capture three sets (20–30 frames each): baseline / higher AG / higher DG (or Dual-CG mode vs default).
Normalize comparison: compare at approximately the same output mean (do not compare “brighter” vs “darker”).
Decide with three checks:
Dark ROI temporal std (noise) — does it drop meaningfully?

Low-light tuning is limited by motion. Extending exposure makes images brighter, but it also integrates motion and can convert “noise”
complaints into “blur” failures. This chapter defines a practical concept—usable shutter—and provides a simple evidence method to
separate exposure blur from denoise ghosting or focus issues.
Usable shutter (practical definition)
“Usable shutter” is the maximum exposure time that keeps motion blur within an application-acceptable limit.
Instead of “as long as possible”, pick a blur tolerance that matches the task:
inspection edges, OCR strokes, barcode modules, or object boundaries.
When exposure pushes blur beyond this tolerance, increasing gain or improving illumination timing is the correct path—not longer shutter.
Exposure, frame rate, and motion (what changes first)
Longer exposure integrates more motion → blur length increases.
Higher frame rate shortens the available frame time budget → exposure window often must shrink, making photon efficiency more critical.
Faster motion (conveyor/robot/handheld) reduces the usable shutter ceiling dramatically; blur grows even if brightness is constant.
Rolling artifacts (phenomena + control levers)
Rolling readout can turn fast motion into geometric distortion (tilted lines, skewed shapes, partial-frame wobble).
Keep the treatment here at the system level:
Reduce exposure time to shrink motion integration.
Use illumination timing (strobe aligned to exposure) to “freeze” motion without requiring long exposures.
When distortion is unacceptable, treat it as a capture-mode constraint and validate with a controlled motion target.
Evidence plan — prove blur is exposure-driven (not denoise ghosting)
Capture a short moving clip with the current settings (note shutter/exposure time).
Disable or minimize temporal denoise for a second capture (keep exposure identical).
Shorten exposure by one step and capture again (keep scene and motion constant).
Interpretation:
If blur length scales predictably with exposure → exposure integration is the main cause.
If “double edges / trailing ghosts” persist even when exposure shortens → temporal denoise/motion compensation is likely involved.
If sharpness changes mainly with wavelength mode (IR-cut vs IR-pass) rather than exposure → consider NIR focus shift (handled in the optics chapter).

IR filtering defines whether the camera protects daytime color fidelity or prioritizes night sensitivity,
while lens transmission and NIR focus shift decide how much usable detail remains at 850/940 nm.
IR-cut vs IR-pass (mode intent, not “better/worse”)
IR-cut (block NIR)
Protects daytime color fidelity by preventing NIR leakage that can distort hue/skin/vegetation.
Night sensitivity is reduced unless NIR is explicitly allowed through another path.
Best fit: day-color priority, mixed lighting scenes, accurate rendering.
IR-pass (pass NIR)
Prioritizes night efficiency by passing 850/940 nm illumination.
Daytime color may drift because NIR content changes spectral balance.

Lens + filter are a pair
The same filter behaves differently across lenses because transmission at 850/940 nm varies.
Treat 850 vs 940 as two different optical channels unless proven equivalent by measurement.
Action: request lens T(850) and T(940) or validate with A/B captures.
850 nm vs 940 nm (what changes first in real images)
Brightness budget: lens/filter/sensor often provide different efficiency at 850 vs 940; do not assume equal exposure results.
Material reflectance: fabrics, plastics, inks, and coatings can invert contrast between VIS and NIR; validate with representative targets.

NIR focus shift (a frequent “looks like ISP” trap)
Many lenses shift focal position with wavelength. A setup that is sharp in visible light can become soft in NIR,
especially at wider apertures. This can appear as “denoise smear” or “low sensor detail”, but it is primarily optical.
Symptom: center seems acceptable but edges lose micro-contrast; fine text/mesh looks washed.
Quick check: refocus under NIR illumination; compare to VIS-focused capture at same distance.
Engineering outcome: keep a separate NIR focus reference or select optics specified for NIR performance.
Evidence plan — isolate optics/filter effects with minimal captures
Keep geometry fixed: same lens, distance, framing. Include a fine-detail target + dark matte patch + reflective patch.

Camera-side timing signals (interface-level)
Trigger-in

Strobe-out
Camera-side output used to fire illumination in sync. Usually combined with programmable delay and pulse width control.
