Domain vs zonal vs hybrid topologies

Inside the gateway SoC

A gateway-class SoC combines multi-port Ethernet MACs and an internal switch or router with automotive CAN, LIN and sometimes FlexRay controllers. A modest CPU complex and basic security engines handle routing, diagnostics and protocol translation between in-vehicle networks.

A central compute SoC adds larger CPU clusters, richer on-chip interconnects and high-speed interfaces such as PCIe and USB. It hosts hypervisors, containerized services and more advanced security islands to consolidate cross-domain functions on a single physical device.

In practice, many devices sit between these two extremes. During IC selection it is useful to decide whether the part primarily behaves as a smart gateway or as a true central compute node, because that choice drives CPU performance, memory bandwidth and power budgets.

External interfaces

On the in-vehicle side, the SoC or its companion switch exposes single and multi-gigabit Ethernet ports alongside CAN-FD, LIN and, in some platforms, FlexRay. The number, speed and placement of these ports define how many domains and zonal ECUs can be aggregated into the central node.

CPU and MPU choices

Gateway-class SoCs typically use a small cluster of ARM Cortex-R or Cortex-A cores to run routing, diagnostics and gateway services. Real-time tasks can be hosted on lockstep Cortex-R or auxiliary microcontroller cores, while less critical applications execute on application-class cores.

Central compute devices scale this up with larger Cortex-A clusters, multi-level caches and full MMU support. They are designed to host multiple operating systems, hypervisors and containerized services that span OTA, security, logging and cross-domain coordination.
